II . INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY BUDDHIST STUDIES
2.1. Nyingma Dharma: Avoid virus of debating
“Having assimilated the Teaching in the stream of my consciousness, I forgot to engage in doctrinal polemics .” Jetsün Milarepa , Song of Love and Compassion – Visual Dharma
Endless debates in some Buddhist monasteries – endless noise, endless verbal aggression, endless nervousness, endless suffering. All wise men and women avoid debates …All wise men and women avoid conceptual ignorance and are just aware. As Buddha Shakyamuni said : “Worldly people like to debate with me, but I am not going to debate with them.” All who debate are imprisoned in bewildered minds of their unawareness and delusion. May their distorted energy of aggressive debates be pacified by radiant wisdom Sword of noble Manjushri Prince of Dharma. As Mahasiddha Drukpa Kunley once said in Bhutan when he approached a monastery : “What are you doing, o ye monks ?” They answered : “We are cleaning our minds from the dust of delusions …” Master went away to avoid pollution by “debating dust”.
If unbiased observer like sociologist or psychologist look at such doctrinal debates at Buddhist monasteries , he would be surprised indeed. Why are some Buddhists so attached to debating ? They wish to reduce Buddhist Dharma to debating only… “Virus of debating” is spreading far and wide. Habitual tendencies of aggressive debating are completely incompatible with contemporary world. How can such people teach spiritual paths , healing or even art ? If you encounter habitual tendencies of aggressive debates and quarrels, apply chapter 6 of the Platform sutra of 6th Patriarch Hui Neng : repent and reform yourself. Deluded must be transformed by Enlightenment. For all contemplative Buddhist orders are debates completely unnecessary indulgence. It is silly to expect from Chan or Zen Buddhists to debate. They practice Dhyana meditation, not debating. They clear doubts in Dokusan personal interviews with Buddhist teachers and masters. If you began to debate with them, they will use Kyosako stick and strongly tap your left and right shoulder to wake you up. It is also silly to expect that Atiyoga / Dzogchen Buddhists should debate. We contemplate Three testaments of Garab Dorje and we don´t remain in doubts.
This Knowledge is self-evident, radiating wisdom Lights.
If you still debate (don´t know how to “decide on one point”), you are still in doubts. Doubts are not dispelled by “debating dust”, but by direct introduction to your natural state, which is Sound*Light of your innate Buddha nature. If you still wish to debate, your name should be §Hunter of dead anthelopes…. according to Chan master Huang Po.
Our research shows , that Nyingma monasteries did not have debates in early centuries of Nyingma Buddhist history. Debates are alien to Nyingma Dharma with countless terma treasures and secret opral instructions (Upadesha) of Ati Yoga Dzogpa chenpo. Debates are not among ten enlightened activities as taught by Shakyamuni Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava. It is contemplating about the meaning of the Dharma, not debating. It is unwise to demand from Buddhist nuns (as kind of gender equality protocol) to debate for 1 month just to prove themselves equal (or almost equal) to monks. German language has right word for such debates : Streitgespräche. Those who realised Praja wisdom don´t debate. It would be interesting to reseach when such debates (Stretgespräche) entered Tibetan Buddhist monasteries ? Maybe in centuries when most of population was illiterate. Statistics show that there is still 60 % ! illiteracy in Bhutan nowdays. We can imagine that such situation was also in Tibet of 19th and 20 Century. There are no real benefits for meditators mind coming from debates. Even Buddhist masters who wanted to meditate placed their retreat outside and abowe the monastery. Famous for such retreats were Gyalwa Karmapas with retreat above Tsurphu monastery in central Tibet.
Some politicians in contemporary world apply rhetoric courses or even NLP programming to appear more eloquent in their public speeches. But such people completely lack emotional intelligence and emphaty for others. We must remember that Manjushri Bodhisattva is the Prince of Dharma – nobody should misuse his simbology of Sword and Prajna book – for futile debates . Supreme method of Manjushri is the same as that of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva : contemplating the Buddha nature in Samadhi . Samadhi is very different from noisy debates . May all who are infected with the virus of debates in silence turn their attention inward and contemplate the Sound*Light of their Buddha nature, Ultimate nature, Dharma-ta. This is true learning for wisdom and all noble qualities of Bodhisattvas .
May extroverted minds of all who wish to debate be pacified with the radiant sword of Buddha Manjushri, cutting down conceptual ignorance wherever their sprouts appear. OM A RA PA TSA NA DHI DHI DHI ….

At times of possible natural disasters like earth quakes, floods like tsunami, fire like in the past of California and Australia… and other natural disasters , it is wise to recite Kunzang Gongpa Zangthal : Wish-granting prayer of Samantabhadra as presented in two Visual Dharmas (part 1,2). It is very irresponsible from broadcasters like Discovery channel, to present catastrophic scenario in 5 parts ! for 2012. It is very irresponsible and unethical to scare people with such catastrophic messages and to earn money by scaring people. Everyone is advised not to look such catastrophic messages like those form Discovery channel and others, but focus on spiritual development, mental peace and recitation of Kunzang Gongpa Zhangtal. These are true Healing meditations for the planet , for oneself and for all beings.

In the Surangama Sutra, Buddha agreed with Avalokiteshvara that comtemplating on the Sound is the best way to attain enlightenment. We can practice this Inner Sound meditation by searching for a true living master. And we have to be vegan as well to purify our bodies and cultivate compasssion.

Enlightenment is to see the Light or to be in the Light. This Light is no outer light but an Inner Light, which only through practising a certain type of meditation can we see the Light, which is th Buddha Nature which we all have inside us. So we can have enlightenment when we see this Inner Light during meditation. Inner Sound is also experienced and is part of the energy/vibration. Buddha’s full enlightenment was described as bright as a thousand suns and yet it did not hurt the eye.
