GENTLE RAIN OF NECTAR BLESSINGS
Vol. V
GENEROSITY OF TEACHING PURE BUDDHA DHARMA
The best of all gifts is the gift of Truth
These words come from the Dharma (Dhamma). They are the footprints (Pada)of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni. We must follow on His footprints. His Dharma is our Path. Dharma is very important Jewel among three Jewels of Refuge : Buddha-Dharma-Sangha. Buddhas teach about ten enlightened activities. First of them is publishing Dharma texts for free distribution and this is the correct way of promoting the Buddha Dharma. These are religious texts and must be treated with respect. These publications are not sold (as merchandise) but are available with donation. Giving donation belongs to first perfection or dana paramita. It is responsibility of Dharma teachers to generously teach the Path of enlightenment and it is the responsibility of those who listen the Dharma to donate according to their possibilities. In Western countries these principles are not enough known , because there is no long history of Buddhism in those countries. But it´s the responsibility of authentic Dharma teachers to promote the Dharma in a correct way ! In such open way the Buddha Dharma is available to all regardless of their social position.
In Buddhism there is centuries old tradition of patrons , donors and sponsors. It brings great merit / positive energy to financially support preparation of Buddhist texts for free distribution. Thus one support Triple gems appearances for all beings. What does it mean to handle Buddhist texts with respect ? In this regard everyone can also learn from other religions : respect of Christians in regard to the Bible, respect of followers of Judaism in regard to Thorah , respect of Sikkhs in regard to their Holy book etc.. Buddhist sacred text are part of the Refuge (Dharma) and must be treated with respect. One should not keep them in low places, on dirthy places, one should not step over them, one should not throw them among garbage etc.
At Buddha Dharma we were very fortunate in last ten years to receive Buddhist literature published for free distribution by the Buddha EducationalFundation, Taiwan. We rejoice at their merit. In appendix there are 81 titles of Dharma books that are available. By studying almost all titles we deepened our understanding of different Buddhist orders and lineages. Good Dharma teacher must also know other Buddhist schools besides one´s own in order to teach the Dharma in a non-sectarian way. This does not mean to mix up everything : it mean that one can quote or explain form the perspective of that particular Buddhist school. Ri-me approach in teaching the Dharma means non-biased or non-partisan way. One can as well belong to this or that particular Buddhist order or lineage. It is important that good Dharma teacher has broad Knowledge about the Dharma, that he/she has personal experiences : not only repeating the words of Dharma predecessors but understanding their meaning. He must also have right motivation to benefit sentient beings through wisdom and authentic compassion based on the Bodhicitta of aspiration and application. He must also dedicate the merit accordingly.
In contemporary globalised world where millions of Truth seekers have internet access, Buddhist orders and lineages can not remain closed in themselves but must open up. We are glad to see that there are Buddhist texts on internet prepared for free download although there are much more dharma books sold as merchandise ! We encourage everyone to publish Dharma texts on internet for free download. In such authentic way we can all serve the humanity. There must be more dialogues between Buddhist orders as it was in the past. There is impression that some Buddhist masters have more dialogues with other religions esp. Christians as among themselves ! We esp. encourage dialogues between Mahayana/Vajrayana and Chan/zen Buddhists as well the dialogues between Theravada and Mahayana orders. This is not only responsibility of the principals of these Buddhist orders but of every practicing Buddhist.
To achieve right education publishing Buddhist texts for free distribution is extremely important enlightened activity. All noble qualities come with right education. Virtuous Dharma activities of the Buddha Educational Foundation in Taiwan inspired us to began to publish Buddhist e-publications of Buddha Dharma in 2003. There are seven such publications available and 40 Visual Dharmas on our YouTube channel (February 2009).
With virtuous deeds we can all step forward on the footsteps of the Buddhas,
following their noble, enlightened examples.
If you publish Buddhist texts for free distribution, please write the titles or internet site where they are published. We will publish the data base on our YouTube channel, thus supporting your beneficial work for all beings.
